SUBTROPICAL GARDENING
Gardening in the Humid-Subtropics by Paul Plant.
This E-book is a brief introduction to gardening. It is not a comprehensive
guide, but it is a great stepping stone from which you can jump feet-first into
the joys and delights of gardening in this region.
The climate of the subtropics is characterised by a mild dry winter-spring
period and a hot wet summer-autumn. Extremes may occur in the subtropics such as frosts (even black frosts) in low lying areas during winter and high temperatures in summer in the western regions away from the coastline.
The subtropics is a climate most suited to human comfort; not too cold in
winter, not too hot in summer. The resultant climate is ideal for garden plants from various climatic zones. Traditionally, gardens have had a mixture of old fashioned tropical foliage plants (such as acalyphas and crotons) planted alongside traditional temperate plants (such as azaleas, camellias and roses).
Care is needed to not select ‘true tropical’ plants that need high humidity,
high rainfall or those plants that dislike chilly nights. It is also important to
avoid disappointment by not growing plants better suited to cool temperate
or Mediterranean climates. Once you understand this, gardening is relatively
easy and highly successful.
